Spatial shift of spatially modulated light projected on turbid media.

This work extends modulated imaging, a recently developed technique based on the projection of structured light on a turbid medium that is able to measure optical properties of the high-scattering medium and perform tomography. We observe that structured light obliquely projected on a turbid medium undergoes a spatial shift during propagation. We propose a method to measure the spatial phase sh...

Sources of errors in spatial frequency domain imaging of scattering media.

Knowledge of the impact of potential sources of error in spatial frequency domain imaging (SFDI) is essential for the quantitative characterization of absorption and scattering in tissue and other turbid media. We theoretically investigate the error in the derived absorption and scattering parameter, subject to typical experimental and theoretical sources of errors. This provides a guideline to...

Stochastic explanation of speckle contrast detection in ultrasound-modulated optical tomography.

Ultrasound-modulated optical tomography is an imaging technique that detects ultrasonically tagged light in optically turbid media to obtain images with optical contrast and ultrasonic spatial resolution. A CCD-camera-based speckle contrast detection scheme has been introduced previously to detect modulated light emerging from the ultrasonic sample volume. Differences in speckle contrast were e...

Determination of optical properties of turbid media spanning visible and near-infrared regimes via spatially modulated quantitative spectroscopy.

We present a novel, noncontact method for the determination of quantitative optical properties of turbid media from 430 to 1050 nm. Through measuring the broadband reflectance from an unknown sample as a function of the spatial frequency of the projected illumination patterns, the absolute absorption and reduced scattering coefficients can be calculated without a priori assumptions of the chrom...

Ultrasound-modulated optical tomography of absorbing objects buried in dense tissue-simulating turbid media.

Continuous-wave ultrasonic modulation of scattered laser light was used to image objects buried in tissue-simulating turbid media. The buried object had an absorption coefficient greater than the background turbid medium. The ultrasonic wave that was focused into the turbid media modulated the laser light that passed through the ultrasonic field. The modulated laser light that was collected by ...
